Standard Operating Procedures
Cal/OSHA requires standard operating procedures (SOPs) be established for work with hazardous chemicals. SOPs document the laboratory-specific procedures for the safe handling, storage and disposal of hazardous chemicals. Principal investigators and laboratory supervisors are responsible for establishing SOPs relevant to health and safety for laboratory activities involving hazardous chemicals under their direction.
UC Davis EH&S SOP Templates
SOPs can be based on: a Process in which a chemical is used, the Hazard of the Chemical or the Hazard Class that your chemical falls under.
You can select what type of SOP you are using at the top of the SOP template pages.
EXAMPLE: Chemical A - used in the PROCESS of extractions (Process SOP)
Chemical A - stand alone SOP for the hazards of Chemical A (Hazard of the Chemical SOP)
Carcinogen, Acutely toxic, etc - has Chemical listed on the SOP along with several others with the same hazard (Hazard Class SOP)
Your lab can decide the best way to develop your SOPs; however, you
MUST HAVE AN SOP FOR ALL HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS!
